Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to analyze the cinematography elements employed in the Philippine independent film: Birdshot directed by Mikhael Red. The study utilized an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Qualitative type of research and specifically used the thematic analysis approach. An analysis on the cinematography styles employed including (1) color palette in set design, (2) camera framing and (3) camera angle/movement in the highlight scenes of Birdshot was conducted based on the three-act narrative structure, wherein a coding sheet was used as a guideline. The researcher also made a semi-structured interview guide question through interpretive phenomenological approach to gather information from the film experts, and indie filmmakers. The study resulted in findings that the film effectively utilizes its cinematography to create a sense of isolation and vastness in the rural setting. Findings are (a) It starts with natural and earthy tones, transitions to stark contrasts and muted tones, and culminates in bold and vibrant accents. This progression helps to visually support the story’s arc, capturing the changing moods and themes of each act while enhancing the audience’s engagement with the film. (b) It starts with eye-level and wide shots to establish the setting and Maya’s innocence, shifts to low and high angles to convey tension and power dynamics, and concludes with dynamic and cinematic shots to heighten the intensity and capture the resolution of Maya’s journey. These camera angles work in tandem with the story to enhance the audience’s engagement and emotional connection with the film. (c) It starts with wide and open framing, transitions to closer and more restrictive framing, and concludes with dynamic and cinematic framing. These choices enhance the storytelling, evoke emotions, and help convey the transformation and challenges faced by the characters as they progress through the narrative. According to Santos (2013), financial constraints are a significant obstacle for indie filmmakers in the Philippines. Limited funding sources and lack of financial support make it difficult to secure adequate resources for production, marketing, and distribution. Despite these challenges, indie filmmakers in the Philippines have also shown remarkable resourcefulness and creativity in overcoming technical limitations. They often find innovative ways to work within their constraints, pushing the boundaries of what is possible with limited resources (Deocampo, 2019).
