Abstract:

Cultural heritage does not end at monuments and collections of objects as perceived by many people around the world. It also includes traditions or living expressions inherited across generations, such as oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe or the knowledge and skills to produce traditional crafts.

In the case of Marikina as a city, it is surrounded by various tangible cultural heritage. From its well-preserved churches, monuments, and ancestral houses, it is also equipped with intangible cultural practices. In view of this, the researcher thinks of an idea that despite the lushness of Marikina in intangible cultural heritage, why is it that these pieces of heritages are only to find in libraries, museums and not being practice in today’s time? This became the inspiration of the researcher in conducting this study entitled The Preservation of Lerion and Balse Mariquina as Intangible Cultural Heritage towards Fostering Marikeño Identity.

The proposed study is an attempt to know the different safeguarding and/or preservation practices of Lerion and Balse Mariquina as intangible cultural heritage towards its role on establishing cultural awareness and fostering of Marikeño identity. The researcher used Qualitative Research Design on this study and the overall design is Descriptive-Historical method. In lieu of the participants in the study, the researcher used a purposeful/ selective sampling technique to gather respondents who will be the core of the data gathering process. The researcher come up into this idea for the reason of simply consulting what the cultural community need in relation to the desired output which is the safeguarding/ preservation practices of the Lerion and Balse Mariquina as ICH/ICR.
