SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES OF THE ACCOMMODATION ESTABLISHMENTS TOWARDS DEVELOPMENT OF OPERATIONAL FRAMEWORK IN CARAGA REGION

Abstract:

This study focuses on the sustainable practices used by the lodging sector in Region 13 and aims to formulate a framework and structured action plan for the achievement of the host region’s sustainable development objectives. The study utilizes descriptive-survey design and purposive sampling research to determine the current sustainability processes in the Region 13 accommodation sector, according to the following pillar of sustainability: Social, Economic, and Environmental, and to identify the effect of guests’ engagement in ensuring the sustainable development in the accommodation industry in Region 13 in terms of Enthusiasm, Attention, Absorption, Interaction, and Identification. This study was conducted in Caraga Region during Calendar Year 2019. The study participants were registered, or DOT accredited hotels, resort owners/managers, provincial officers in Caraga Region, city tourism officers, municipal tourism, and hotels’/resort guests. As such, the findings employing mean revealed that the respondents agreed that the accommodation industry in Region 13 is currently doing sustainability practices based on the pillar of sustainability: Social, Environmental and Economic, and the effect of guests’ engagement as to Absorption, Enthusiasm, Attention, Interaction, and Identification in ensuring the sustainable development in the accommodation industry in Region 13 is excellent.

Furthermore, in employing thematic analysis, the accommodation industry in Region 13 integrates sustainable management practices into its business strategies through recycling, minimizing waste, purchasing energy-saving lights, saving water, and monitoring the implementation of policies.
