Abstract:

This research paper proposes an integrated online scheduling system for Catholic church services with SMS notification and QR code recognition. The system aims to help churches and churchgoers adapt to the “new normal” brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic by enabling contactless scheduling of church services like wedding conferences, baptisms, and burial masses.

The online system allows guests to view available schedules across five example Catholic churches and book appointments conveniently amidst social distancing protocols. Upon user registration, the system sends a verification SMS to ensure guests provide valid mobile numbers for important updates. Each user also gets a unique QR code which authorized church personnel can scan for instant access to their details when they physically enter the church premises. This allows for efficient contact tracing. The system gives the church office full control over managing church accounts and bookings. Key features include maintaining the church calendar, monitoring reservations, sending SMS blasts to users, generating reports, and keeping electronic logs. This is expected to enhance church operations and interactions in the COVID era.

As part of the methodology, the researchers gathered system requirements, developed use case diagrams, class diagrams, activity diagrams, sequence diagrams and other models to design the system. They followed an Agile development approach with iterative testing. Evaluation involved 81 respondents assessing the platform based on criteria like functionality, usability, reliability and efficiency using questionnaire surveys. Results showed positive ratings, indicating the system’s capability to serve the intended purpose. The online church booking system with contactless features offers churches and worshippers a beneficial solution enabling continued services despite limitations introduced by the pandemic. Further work should focus on incorporating additional functionalities like online payments, more church categories, customizable system access, and stronger accessibility options.
