Aldrine Anzures, a student at Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), participated in two international exchange programs celebrating the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation.

JENESYS ASEAN-Japan Golden Friendship Exchange

From August 8th to 17th, 2023, Aldrine joined the JENESYS ASEAN-Japan Golden Friendship Exchange alongside 12 other Philippine university students. The program immersed participants in discussions about the 50 years of ASEAN-Japan relations, Japan’s collaboration with the United Nations, and Okinawa’s marine conservation efforts. As part of their cultural experience, the delegates delved into Japanese language lessons, toured the Yuntanza Museum, visited a family in Yomitan Village, and participated in sessions on karate and Eisa, a traditional Okinawan dance. Aldrine significantly contributed to the last day’s reporting session, presenting a proposal to encourage more ASEAN youth to participate in exchange programs through regular social media updates and consultations utilizing alumni accounts.

47^th Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program

Aldrine was chosen as one of the 10 Philippine participants in the 47th Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP) from November 29th to December 8th, 2023. The “Silay” delegation, representing diverse sectors like academia, government, and NGOs, brought together a unique group of young people.

Representing LPU and Luzon as one of the Philippine Young Ambassadors of Goodwill, Aldrine participated in the discussion group on Economic Growth and Sustainable Cities. The group focused on sharing best practices, reflecting on Japan’s initiatives, and collectively forming solutions for urban issues in ASEAN countries. One program highlight was a presentation showcasing business ideas that balance profitability with environmental sustainability.

During his three-day homestay in Yamagata, Aldrine learned basic Kendama tricks and danced Hanagasa alongside SSEAYP delegates and Yamagata university students, all while wearing traditional kimonos. This experience also included a tour organized by his foster parents and culminated in a local youth exchange with elementary students at Yamagata City Municipal First Elementary School.

50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation

On the final day of the 47th SSEAYP, delegates from each country shared their cultural presentations at a commemorative event celebrating the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship. The SSEAYP alumni, representatives from ASEAN countries’ governments, and staff from each country’s embassies in Japan attended the event.

Aldrine’s participation in both programs showcases LPU’s dedication to nurturing globally engaged students who can contribute to a more interconnected and sustainable world.
