Abstract:

The issues of acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community in the Filipino society still remain as evidenced by the long history of misrepresentation in mainstream media and continued discrimination they face. The study aims to determine the extent of the impact of representation on the perceptions of college students from the College of Arts and Sciences of Lyceum of the Philippines University-Manila towards the LGBTQIA+ community. In this context, media representation refers to movies and television shows that promote awareness towards issues of human rights, equality, discrimination, and injustice as well as acceptance. The impact of LGBTQIA+ representation, it can be concluded that there were little but significant media effects on the participants’ overall perceptions of the LGBTQIA+ community. Although the results showed that they were able to gain understanding, knowledge, and empathy through the media they consumed, it had little effect on the participants’ perceptions of the LGBTQIA+ community because they relied more on what they observed from their peers’ experiences as members of the community.
