Ph.D. STUDENT GUIDE TO SCHOLARLY PUBLICATION

  1. RATIONALE

In alignment to international accreditation and standards of Ph.D. programs. Effective 2020 Ph.D. students pursuing their respective program degrees in the graduate school is required, during the duration of their academic studies in LPU, to publish at least one research paper in either a reputable National or International Research Journal. This is aside from the end of the course research dissertation requirement. The publication shall serve as a prerequisite to be able to take comprehensive examination.

 

  1. OBJECTIVES

To facilitate, maintain and ensure scholarly publication of Ph.D. student research productivity.  

 

  1. DEFINITION OF TERMS
  • International conference is a conference organized by a reputable international association which may be held in or outside the Philippines.
  • International refereed journals are journals that are included in the Scopus Index Journal List or in the International Scientific Indexing.
  • Conference paper refers to a publication where papers are presented in an international conference and published in its affiliated refereed proceeding.
  • Seminar paper refers to a paper of an original research that is presented in a group/ colloquium/ research session for peer review.  

 

  1. POLICIES
  • Expectations for students in Scholarly Publication

Students are expected to demonstrate the program learning outcomes in a form of publication through his/her course outcome, thesis and dissertation. For it to be disseminated in an international community, papers must be translated into paper formats that suit to the requirement of an international conference or an international refereed journal.

The expectations of rigor, depth, and quality of research on scholarly publications must be identical to those expected in thesis and dissertation formats. For example, a Doctor of Philosophy candidate who is planning to work on an academic journal article will essentially follow the prescribed journal format of his/her intended publishing agency, while also following the research report guidelines (F-RIC-011) of Lyceum of the Philippines University Research and Innovation Center.

 

  • Papers suitable for Scholarly Publication

LPU permits the publication of original research work or from the segments of student’s thesis or dissertations through scholarly publication. This may be in a form of a journal article, book chapter, conference proceedings, seminar papers, policy paper or other format relevant to the student’s discipline for as long as the publication is indexed in either Scopus, ISI, Web of Science or IEEE.

The panel advisers/ professors, through the College/ Graduate School, shall provide full assistance to the students in identifying topics, details and venues for publication in order for students to finish within the approved timetable, especially within the ideal program duration.

 

  • Declaration of Affiliation and Authorship Contribution

Scholarly publication included in or segmented from course outcome, thesis or dissertation must represent original research and must have been approved and reviewed by his/her panel adviser/ committee or Professors. When a paper has multiple authors, student must be the principal or the first author of the published work. The research upon which the scholarly publication is based must not have been undertaken for another degree.

Scholarly publication must reflect affiliation of the principal author (student) with the Lyceum of the Philippines University. The inclusion of other affiliations such as the author’s employer, funding agency, author’s company or the like, may be allowed as required.

Full- time Faculty members who are part of the authorship shall receive a publication incentive commensurate to his/ her share on authorship (i.e., publication incentive divided by the number of authors in a published paper), while students may be entitled to a half subsidy of the conference proceeding or publication cost (whichever leads to Scopus or ISI/ Web of Science publication).

 

  • Research Grants

Best or selected student papers co-authored by LPU full-time faculty may be eligible to apply for a half subsidy of International Paper Presentation Grant or Publication Grant, but not to exceed PHP 30,000 per paper, provided they satisfy the criteria set forth under the University Research Agenda and Academic Affairs Manual (AAM 14.07). The College or Graduate School Dean has the authority to endorse which student paper is eligible to apply for RIC grants.

LPU full-time faculty advisers handling endorsed student papers are entitled to one (1) grant every two fiscal years (June 1 to May 31).

 

  • Conflict Resolution arising from Publication Biases

Issues and conflicts emanating from process of scholarly publication may be elevated to the Office of the Dean for review and resolution. The Dean may also form a research review committee which may include the dean, the research director, research consultants and a member of the Academic Council to help him in conflict resolution.

Any exception to the above guidelines may be endorsed to the Management by the research review committee upon the recommendation of the Office of Academic Affairs.

 

  1. NARRATIVE PROCEDURE

 

  • Student submits the following documents to RIC office:
    1. Copy of the abstract and research article
    2. Copy of Call for papers from the prospective journal or conference/ colloquium
    3. Profile of the conference/ publishing journal committee
    4. Letter of intent (if qualifies for grant item 4.4 endorsed by the Dean, otherwise does not apply)
    5. Duly accomplished RIC Forms: F-RIC-001, F-RIC-002, F-RIC-003 (if qualifies for grant item 4.4 endorsed by the Dean, otherwise does not apply)
    6. Duly accomplished RIC grant application Form F-RIC-010 (if qualifies for grant item 4.4 endorsed by the Dean, otherwise does not apply)

  • RIC screens the publishing journal/ conference details and ensures that such publication shall be indexed in either Scopus or ISI/ Web of Science.
  • Once approved, RIC issues a peer review & evaluation form (F-RIC-014) to be counter-signed by the panel adviser. In the absence of a panel adviser, the Dean of Graduate School shall sign the form.
  • Student returns the peer review & evaluation form (F-RIC-014) back to RIC.
  • RIC recommends the submission of student research to the organizing committee of the prospective journal or conference/ colloquium, through the College/ Graduate School.
