15th Guidance Counselor Seminar: School Crisis Management Interventions in Mental Health-Related Cases
Attended by 140 guidance counselors from different high schools in NCR and nearby regions, the 15th Guidance Counselor Seminar was held on October 12, 2018 at the Muralla Ballroom, The Bayleaf Intramuros. This annual seminar focuses on mental health issues such as suicide prevention, addiction counseling, and handling students with disruptive behaviors.
With the theme “School Crisis Management Interventions in Mental Health-Related Cases”, the seminar equipped the attendees with knowledge, skills, and attitude in managing crises brought about by risky behaviors arising from mental health-related issues and urged them to have comprehensive protocols and effective interventions.
The morning activities started with the invocation led by Ms. Eileen Garcia of Guidance and Testing Center (GTC), followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, and welcome remarks by Ms. Sandra Recto, Director of Communication and Public Affairs Department (CPD).
To give an overview on mental health crisis and identifying risks and protective factors, Dr. Ma. Cristina Esquivel-Saldivar, PhD, RPsy, RGC, a full-time professor and office head in De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Consultant Psychologist in In Touch Community Services, Inc., and President of Association of Psychological and Educational Counselors of Asia Pacific (APECA Philippines) was introduced as the first speaker.
The next presenter, Dr. Leo Capeding, is the Director for Guidance and Counseling Center of UP – Manila, and is the Vice President of the Association of Psychological and Educational Counselors of Asia Pacific. His session has two parts entitled “Preparation of Crisis Teams” and “Risk Management Guidelines and Protocols for Guidance Counselors”.
Dr. Susana A. Estanislao, PhD, RGC, RPsy, a Board Member of the Association of Psychological and Educational Counselors of Asia Pacific, the last speaker of the seminar, discussed “Counselor Wellness: Trauma Management.”
Ms. Carolyn Quiba, Director of the Guidance and Testing Center, shared the Mental Health Crisis Protocol of LPU and ended the program with her closing remarks.
