Historic 93rd NCAA Season: LPU barges into the finals with an 18-0 sweep
“Together is better” affirmed Coach Topex Robinson as Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates made history in the 93rd NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Elimination Rounds with a hard-earned 18-0 sweep.
As Coach Robinson told inquirer.net (2017), “They just don’t wanna give up. Credit goes to the coaches also, they are working extra hard. It’s really about being together, we always talk about together is better. It’s just a testament of really working together as a solid group, you can really change a lot. I’m so blessed I’m surrounded with the right people. These guys really get the credit, it’s not mine.” CJ Perez and Mike Nzeusseu led the team to a heart-pounding double overtime game that drove the Pirates to the historic sweep. This winning game automatically advanced the team into its first championship round since joining NCAA in 2011.
Then came the championship rounds. The LPU Pirates remained strong and ahead in the early quarters of the game (Q1:17-22, Q2:41-47, Q3:65-66, Q4:92-82) which gave its strongest contender, San Beda Red Lions, a not-easy game.
But the historic season ended for the Pirates; the defending champion Red Lions reigned on its back-to-back championship slate. The Pirates had an amazing journey throughout the season, garnering an 18-0 elimination sweep that no one expected, even the coaches and players themselves, but yes – it happened. This is not the end, but a beginning for the Pirates as they will surely be the most anticipated and sought-after team next season for bringing in a fresh and promising play in NCAA.
As Coach Topex said, "Season 93 is just the tip of the iceberg for us. We have so many things to be grateful for, and we just have to continue doing what we're doing. What's important is our vision will keep on going, keep on moving, and it just lit a fire that really going to keep this fire burning for us." (news.abs-cbn.com, 2017).
