President's Message

As we find ourselves in this unprecedented time of learning, teaching and working, I wish to take a moment to convey my gratitude and appreciation to everyone in the LPU community.
First and foremost, to our teachers, faculty, academic heads and support staff for coming together and proactively making such dramatic transitions. Your support, cooperation and teamwork enable us to face the challenges of the times that many of us could not have imagined when ECQ was imposed last March. READ MORE..

2nd LPU Inter-High School Basketball Tournament Held

Champions Lakan Dula High School with LPU Administrators

To foster the spirit of camaraderie and promote academic excellence through sports, Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Manila recently held its 2nd Inter-High School Basketball Invitational Tournament at the LPU Gymnasium in Intramuros. The three-day event hosted various Grade 9 and 10 Basketball Teams from private and public high schools in Metro Manila.

The tournament began on November 11, with the parade of participating teams, including Gregorio Perfecto High School (GPHS), St. Mary’s Academy Manila (SMAM), Lakan Dula High School (LDHS), Araullo High School, Florentino Torres High School (FTHS), Timoteo Paez High School (TPHS), Manuel A. Roxas High School (MARHS), Jose Abad Santos High School (JASHS) and St. Joseph School of Pandacan (SJSP). After the invocation led by LPU Senior High School (SHS) Principal Clarence Ella Alipio, Athletics Director Hercules Callanta delivered a few words of inspiration to the young players.

To get the ball rolling, GPHS forward John Michael Sabordo led the athletes in the Oath of Sportsmanship. The teams then drew lots to determine the order of play. Since there was an odd number of teams, an ad hoc selection from the LPU SHS was put together to play against the team who drew the 9th spot. With the luck of the draw, SJSP would move on to the second round, whether they won or lost against LPU SHS.

In the first round, GPHS, LDHS, FTHS, MARHS, and LPU SHS would go on to beat SMAC, Araullo HS, TPHS, JASHS, and SJSP, respectively. Jose Abad Santos High School, who lost by only one point, was given the wildcard slot for the second round. This would ensure an even number of teams going head-to-head for Round Two.

The following Friday, November 18, saw GPHS, LDHS, and JASHS, reaching the semi-finals with wins against MARHS, SJSP, and FTHS, respectively. As the wildcard team for the Final Four, Florentino Torres HS would complete the semi-final lineup.

The semi-final cast met each other again the following week, this time with Lakan Dula HS and Jose Abad Santos HS beating their respective opponents Florentino Torres HS and Gregorio Perfecto HS. The Championship round was held that same afternoon, with last year’s First runners-up, Lakan Dula High School, beating the Justices from Jose Abad Santos High School, to be crowned this year’s Champions. Because of his consistent shooting, scoring an average of 13 points per game, LDHS guard Richard Luteria was declared the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
